This is an easy-to-read vegan shopping list to save your time and money on your vegan/ plant-based journey!

When I first started my vegan/plant-based foods journey, it felt quite stressful to go grocery shopping. I was new to Japan and I never really knew, which products are free from animal derived ingredients, which ones are “healthy” and moreover: what does a “balanced diet” even mean…?? 😥
Therefore I just continued to buy the same, “safe” stuff over and over again, which made my diet quite boring and repetitive. Don’t get me wrong, pasta with tomato sauce is great – but from a nutritional point of view it is not great to have it every single day.

❓But what to do?
👉Knowing exactly WHAT to buy!

It took me a while (including studying about nutrition) to figure out what groceries to buy in order to ensure a balanced and healthy plant-based diet.

To save YOU all the time and nerves I lost in the past, I put together a list with recommended foods to buy. I really hope, that you like it! 😊🥳🌱

Of course I couldn’t include all the groceries there are in this world, but the ones I listed are nutritious, mostly cheap and commonly available anywhere in Japan.

❗️Important notes:
👉The small pack of sauce coming with the nattō usually contains fish.
👉The nattō itself is also not always vegan, because the bacteria (nattō-kin) needed for the fermentation process is often grown on gelatin or fish waste. There are usually no traces left in the finished product, however it is technically “not 100% vegan”. However, some manufacturers are producing their nattō the traditional way, using nattō-kin from rice straws.
👉Some miso also contain fish-extract (かつおエキス), so make sure to buy miso without additives (無添加味噌󠄀).
👉some vegetable bouillons also contain animal extracts, so it is better to check the label carefully.
